Studies on Morphological Changes of Various Organs and Tissue Storage Irons in Rats Simultaneously Administered with Ethionine and Methionine

Abstract
Albins rats, 100-200gm of body weight, were raised on the diet Containing 0.5% DL-ethionine and 1% DL-methionine for 1, 2 and 3 months, and the tissue of various organs of each month group rats were studied morphologically. Quantative anlyses of tissue storage irons and serum iron were also made to observe the change in their distribution.
1) Body Weight: The body weight of rats placed on the experimental diet group showed and initial weight loss. 1.3¡3.4% of initial bodyweight, during the first 3 weeks and the average total weight gain of experimental group rats at the end of 12th week was considerably lower than that of control group rats.
2) Weight of various organs: The average weights of liver and spleen of the one, two and three month experimental group rats showed an increase over those of control group, but no noticeable difference was observed in submaxilly glands and testis.
3) Liver: The histological alterations in the liver in all experimental groups included fatty infiltration of mild (in male animals) to moderate (in female animals) degree, slight regenerative changes of the hepatic parenchymal cells and epithelial proliferation of bile ducts accompanied by fibrous connective tissue proliferation and inflammatory cell infiltration.
4) Spleen: Mild to oderate increase in cellularity and congestion of the red pulp were observed in all experimental group animals. Iron reaction, which was weakly positive in the one month group, showed more intensity to its reactivity in the two and three month groups.
5) Salivary gland and pancreas: Atorophy and distortion of the acinic cells of the salivary gland and pancreas were noted in the one month group, appearing in mild degree in male animals and in moderate degree in female animals. These changes were followed by remarkable regenerative changes in the later experimental group.
6) Kidneys: There were mild (in male) to moderate (in female) calcium deposits in the collecting tubules and atrophy and fibrosis of the glomeruli alternating with glomerular swelling in all experimental groups. Regenerative changes of the tubular epithelium were noted in the two and three month groups.
7) Testes: Mild atrophic changes were noted in the seminiferous tubules in a few animals of the experimental groups.
8) Serum iron and tissue irons: The levels of serum iron of the experimental groups were lower thanthe control group. The quantities of hemosiderin and ferritin iron in the hepatic and duodenal tissue were greater in the two and three month groups than in the control group. No difference was noted in the testes between the experimental and control groups.
